R\u00e9alisateur, cam\u00e9raman\u00a0et \u00e9crivain\/historien, Daniel Symmes<\/strong>\u00a0possede sa propre entreprise\u00a0DIMENSION 3<\/a><\/strong> et a, par la force des choses,\u00a0particip\u00e9 a de nombreux classiques du cin\u00e9ma 3D. Sa carri\u00e8re, il la d\u00e9bute \u00e0 travers le Soft-Porn<\/em> The Stewardesses<\/strong> en 1969 (dont le DVD devrait rejoindre toute collection qui se respecte soit dit en passant)\u00a0puis enchaine avec ce qui reste l’un des moments les plus importants de sa vie: la ressortie en salles\u00a0de House of Wax<\/strong> en 1971 et sa\u00a0collaboration avec le r\u00e9alisateur Andr\u00e9 de Toth<\/strong>. When were you approached by Universal for Jaws 3d?
\n<\/strong>I don’t recall the date, though I’d have that SOMEWHERE in my records. Maybe MAY ’82?
\nThere was a 3D bakeoff between 3D systems and I won<\/em>.
\nYou made tests with the Dimension 3 system in Florida in 82 for this movie. Do you remember the shooting? What particular scenes were being shot? Were you already working from a script?
\n<\/strong>The film we did was from scenes from the script, but with extra talent playing the parts. The purpose of the film was to prove to Universal the Landsburg\/Alves team could do it. It was all exterior at Seaworld (though we did a shot through a viewing window at the sharks).<\/em><\/p>\n

\nWere there already discussions about shooting with blue screens and miniatures?<\/strong>
\nNot with me. That was to be handled by other parties (which I knew).
\nSadly, the live action in the film is a total mismatch to the motion control shots<\/em>.
\nIn a 1983 Cinefantastique issue, you’re stating that according to Comandini (from Universal), the Dimension\u00a03 system was a better system than the one that was ultimately used, the Arriflex system. What are your thoughts about the quality of the 3d in the movie, and do you regret that your system wasn’t used?
\n<\/strong>ANYBODY with film experience can spot the poor image quality (including chromatic aberration). That was made worse by lazy\/improper lighting<\/em>.
\nWhy does the shark growl underwater?
\n<\/strong>Because it CAN? Because spaceships MUST make a sound? Seriously: management at Universal<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Si le proc\u00e9d\u00e9\u00a0Dimension 3<\/strong> n’a finalement pas \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9 pour le tournage de Jaws 3D<\/strong>, c’est avant tout\u00a0\u00e0 propos d’\u00a0une sombre histoire de lentilles comme le raconte si bien\u00a0Symmes<\/strong> dans un num\u00e9ro du magazine \u00a0Cin\u00e9fantastique<\/strong> datant de 1983. Dimension 3<\/strong> \u00e9tait\u00a0alors dans l’incapacit\u00e9 financi\u00e8re\u00a0de fournir suffisamment de lentilles \u00e0 Universal<\/strong> . La c\u00e9l\u00e8bre firme\u00a0pris donc la d\u00e9cision de rompre\u00a0imm\u00e9diatement toute collaboration avec\u00a0Daniel Symms<\/strong> et son \u00e9quipe pour cette seule et unique raison.\u00a0Comme le souligne le principal int\u00e9ress\u00e9, un\u00a0simple contrat\u00a0aurait permis \u00e0 Dimension 3<\/strong> de fabriquer le mat\u00e9riel n\u00e9cessaire…<\/p>\n
