\u00ab\u00a0J<\/strong>ohn Hughes<\/strong> was an editor at the Lampoon. What happened with John Hughes<\/strong> was, I was having lunch at the Friar\u2019s Club with David Brown<\/strong>, who produced Jaws<\/strong>, and he said, \u201cOh, we\u2019ve got to do a movie together.\u201d As a gag, I said to him, National Lampoon\u2019s Jaws 3, People Nothing<\/strong>. He looked at me like, \u201cWhat?\u201d Then, [I] came up with a story I made up on the spot, and he said, \u201cI love it!\u201d and ran to the phone and called his partner, Richard Zanuck<\/strong>. He said, \u201cWe\u2019re meeting Ned Tannen<\/strong>,\u201d who was the head of Universal, \u201ctonight at the Rainbow Grill.\u201d He said, \u201cWe\u2019ll do this. You\u2019re a producer, we\u2019ll be executive producers.\u201d He calls me back, he says, \u201cNed<\/strong> wants to do it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

So, I go back to my office and I call my secretary in, and I had to remember the story I told, you know? I dictated the story, and when they called and told me the studio wanted to do it, I walked into the editorial office, and I know who I was looking for. Two of the editors were sitting there: a guy named Tod Carroll<\/strong> and a guy named John Hughes<\/strong>. Neither of them had ever written a movie script before. I called \u2018em into my office, and I said, \u201cThis is the story for Jaws 3, People Nothing<\/strong>. You guys are gonna write the screenplay.\u201d And they wrote it. The leading lady was Bo Derek<\/strong>, Richard Dreyfus<\/strong>s was in it, and Joe Dante<\/strong>, who was an unknown director at the time was gonna direct it. The studio had $2 million into pre-production, and\u00a0 Tannen<\/strong> called me on the phone, \u201cI have to see you.\u201d He said, \u201cI have to pull the plug.\u201d I was furious. I had just closed Animal House<\/strong>, I was the hottest producer of the year. He wouldn\u2019t tell me why. I found out in later years that Spielberg<\/strong> went to the heads of the company and said, \u201cIf you do this movie, I\u2019m leaving.\u201d He thought it demeaned him and demeaned Jaws<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n
